Great heroine stars in a taut urban mystery

Ecuadorian-American Filomena Buscarsela left the New York Police Department to work for the Environmental Action Foundation. However, to her chagrin, she finds the non-profit organization appearing more corrupt than her previous employment. Filomena is totally dismayed with the vicious murder-robbery of neighbor Senor Perez, owner of a Washington Heights' bodega. When the deceased's sister pleads with Filomena to investigate, she cannot resist because she knows that otherwise this case will close as another ethnic murder not solved. Filomena serendipitously pairs with rookie police officer Janette Ivins. As the two sleuths make inquires they soon realize that the case will lead Filomena back her to her new employee, who may be more crooked than she initially realized. The second Buscarsela novel is a superb hard-nosed urban mystery that will bring the author many new fans enjoying the works of k.j.a Wishnia. The story line is crisp as Filomena relentlessly works the streets. The northern Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights comes alive, teeming with excitement and danger. As with 23 SHADES OF BLACK, SOFT MONEY is clearly owned by Filomena, who can be as tough as they come while alternately being totally gentle with her infant.Harriet Klausner
