Excellent investigation into an often overlooked history

I loved this book! The fall of the Soviet Union is a very overlooked piece of history for how much of an impact it had on the world, I find that bouth sides of the political spectrum greatly simplify the reasons behind its collapse but this book does not! It goes into great detail about the rise In the second economy, the economic liberalization, the USSRs involvement in Afghanistan, Gorbachevs changes in policy over time, the rise in nationalism, as well as exactly how Boris Yeltsin came to power. The book breaks down why some commonly accepted ideas about the fall are either wrong or just can’t be backed up and provides a great explanation for how all the compounding factors eventually culminated in the fall of the Soviet Union and the restoration of capitalism (you could argue capitalism was restored - at least in part - prior to the fall die to the extreme economic reforms)
