A Broader Focus on Social Problems

This is an excellent collection of articles that begin to open up contemporary social problems in relation to their global dimensions and connections. Besides doing so quite effectively, this collection is, in the process, quite approachable for the general reader: it gathers sources that are deep enough for the specialist in social research, but also understandable for the average reader who may not have an in-depth background in the social sciences. We hear much today about our "global society." This book helps to get beyond the cliche, to explore what this means in practical, grounded terms. In the process, it helps (in the best tradition of sociology) to develop a "sociological imagination".... to help us take the surface views of the world today available to us through mainstream sources, and to put them to the test of careful, critical social analysis.
