Soaring!: New Thinking on Leadership

SOARING! New Thinking on Leadership"A leader's role is to raise people's aspirations for what they can become, and release their energies so they will try to get there."Anonymous Congratulations! You are about to learn to soar! I'm Heidi Boerstler. As a professor of transformational leadership and health law and ethics at the Business School, University of Colorado, Denver, I am privileged to work on transformation with leaders and future leaders from every kind of organization. Many of the people with whom I work have questions about new leadership roles in a constantly changing environment. They ask, "Why do we connect to some leaders and not to others?"; "What do good leaders do?" Not finding resources that addressed their real world concerns, I have written the book, Soaring! New Thinking on Leadership. Included are essays that are drawn from my academic and community lectures, articles I have written, and stories from those who have walked the walk. Leaders in organizations have a special duty. They are called to nourish and grow their people while at the same time meeting the demands of a complex constituency. Instead of the typical organizational pattern of expectation and fear, the leader's role is to bring a different kind of energy that promotes soaring and not fear; taking root and not stagnation. We need transformational leaders, not simply people with answers; leaders who inspire those around them to new ways of seeing and growing with the abundance of possibilities before them. This new seeing is based not just on knowledge and information, but on the experience that comes from connecting to who you are at the deepest level. It is bedrock for leadership- the gift of lifting others up and helping them soar. My intention is that each essay will be an invitation to opportunity. More important, I hope you will have a fun learning experience!
