Vietnamese voices startled Marie awake. She cautiously rolled over and faced the direction of the voices.Just as she predicted, someone was coming to the garden plot. Their noise included the clank of garden tools. She heard adult voices along with excited voices of children. Marie was sure the people were coming up the trail from the village she had seen during the fly-in. She crawled forward to peer through the foliage straining her ears to understand the dialect.A group of people emerged from the trail and entered the clearing. They stopped and stared at the hulking object in their garden spot covered with netting. Talking excitedly, they slowly approached the object. One of the group, a tall man, stated, It's a helicopter. The people began looking about and peeking under the cover of the helicopter.Emerging suddenly from her spot in the bush, Marie addressed them in Vietnamese, warning them to move away from the craft. She pretended to be a Vietnamese army regular and held the AK-47 rifle slung across her chest in the standard manner.
