A funny and engaging take on that first year of living in New York, when a person struggles to decide between paying the rent or going out on the town. After graduating Sophie knows she wants to go to New York and become a music journalist - and, finally landing a job at BeatMaker magazine, finding the perfect Ikea-filled apartment and meeting a cute rapper named Furious, she thinks she has it all. Until the entertainment business throws up some wild missteps and she is forced to learn to stand up for herself and concentrate on the real love of her life - hip hop.
This book is about a girl named Sophie who moved to New York trying to make it in the music industry. However, she faced many ups and downs before her dreams were fulfilled. The book was what I expected and it was a joy to read. I was most interested in the way she had a passion for hip-hop. I leanred that by following your dreams you sometimes have to make difficult choices and give up things that mean everything to you. To my understanding the unique thing about this book is the narration. I found that the way in which the book was written made it easier for me to relate to the story. I will recommend this book to my cousin because she loves music and she will love to read it.

i loved this. the lead character comes off as someone who truly loves hip-hop and reveres the form. the scene which the narrator interviews outcast is funny. what is " cricket booty " anyway? wasfie's description of diddy is pitch perfect. from what i heard, he's not the easiest person to deal with. the interview with slick rick at the end of the novel was cool. sadly, you don't hear much about him anymore...
Knows her stuff

Giselle Zado Wasfie is no stranger to the music industry or to hip-hop; she has written countless articles and conducted countless interviews on musicians, rappers, and industry professionals for the likes of VH1, The Source, and BlackBook. Perhaps her apparent fervor and passion for music is what makes her debut novel, SO FLY, seem so genuine and seem so effortlessly written. Sophie Drako is on a mission to take New York City by storm with her journalistic persuasion. After hooking a job at a popular high-gloss, high-fashion rag, Sophie's burnout comes sooner than later. She'd much rather be interviewing up and coming hip-hop artists and movers and shakers of the underground music scene. Added to Sophie's employment woes are her man problems. She's dealing with a hot emcee she can't get off her mind and a wishy-washy beau who isn't sure of what he wants. Soon, Sophie's love woes cross the line into her career, and the result is drama, drama, and more drama. SO FLY was such an entertaining and enjoyable read. Not only was I engrossed in the plot, Wasfie's mention of some of my favorite songs caused me to throw up my hands and yell out, "Oh, snap! That was the song!!" Wasfie's writing seemed effortless and smooth, and I was glued to each and every page. In addition, some of Wasfie's actual interviews with some of hip-hop's royal rhymers are included. For an entertaining, reminiscent, fun, and witty book, SO FLY lives up to its title 100 percent. Reviewed by CandaceK of The RAWSISTAZ™ Reviewers
Perfect summer read for lovers of music (esp. hip hop), New

This was the most fun book I've read in a LONG time! Know how you're always looking for the perfect summer read--something fun that's not dumb? Well, this was it for me! You can read it in a few good sittings and you won't want to put it down. It's kind of like Melissa Bank's The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing meets Vibe or the Source. It's about dating and romance, but in a witty way. More than that, though, I think it's a book for music lovers. You can tell Wasfie knows her stuff. It's obvious she really works in the industry. There're even some transcripts from real interviews in the back of the book. I love hip hop, and this is the first book I've read that deals with the hip hop scene in a way that's real and exciting without being raunchy and overdramatic. It has a good behind the scenes feel and you feel like an insider reading it. Loved it!!
I finished this in 1 day!

This was my favorite book and I am excited to be the first person to review it. This book was so good. It's about a girl named Sophia. She loves hip hop and gets tangled up with the wrong guys to fit in the "hip hop" culture, all the while she's not getting anywhere by doing this. When she decides to focus on her true love for hip hop, good things start to happen for her. I loved this and could relate to Sophie's character.
