The characters in this novel are quite original. The author has a very unique way of delving into the characters' thoughts and motivations, making them complex and occasionally perplexing. The setting and mood of the book are engrossing and it has a climactic ending. It transcends any specific topics of focus (coming of age, homosexuality, etc.) Good book!
Intense and gratifying on all levels.

Ben Pierce is a one of those writers with enough talent and potential to make you take a chance on a work published outside of the usual channels and make you realize that perhaps some of the best writers out there have yet to be discovered. SPD & Sleep is a dense satisfying read that transcends any of the genre labels one may put upon it..(mystery, coming of age, Gay novel) and becomes something entirely unique. Imagine Dickens, Camus, and S. E. Hinton, consulting with Jean Cocteau and you start to scratch the surface of whats going on here. You quickly throw your lot in with these characters and identify with their plight to the point where you feel their pain and share in their triumphs and failures. Pierce is able to celebrate the outsider without ever dipping into over sentimentality or cliches, and often creates a nail biting intensity on par with Hitchcock. The final debate that takes place between the religious right and the gay community should be mandatory reading for anyone who thinks the bible is definitive on the subject of homosexuality. And for those initiated few there is an underlying mystical element to this book that is sublime.
