Surprising content from one of my favorite authors

Having read at least 28 of Ms. Beers' novels, I have a general idea what to expect - the tension, the flirting, the ultimate freaking out, that first kiss (no one writes a first kiss like Georgia Beers does), the falling out, then finally getting together. So I was taken aback when Allie told a "Polack joke" in the beginning. The imprint is 2016, not 1976, when theses "jokes" were in fashion. Unfortunately, these jokes are repeated throughout the entire book, and for me, it really detracted from the primary characters' story. No other books that I've read have taken this tack in a character - telling so-called jokes that aren't funny at all, especially if you're Polish or Polish-American. I felt that this added element didn't add to the characters, rather, it detracted.
