A part of Australian history

In Australia the issue of aboriginal reconciliation has been in the local media for a number of years highlighted by issues such as; the 'Stolen Generation' (the forced removal of black children into white homes during the 20th Century) and land claims based on the historic 'Mabo' ruling of last decade. With the background of the Sydney 2000 Olympics, the indigenous population of Australia will be ensuring that aboriginal rights take centre stage in the world media. Dr Roberta Sykes is an activist striving for the recognition of aboriginals in Australia since the late 1960's through to today. As part of the original 'Tent Embassy' in 1972 she is both revered and ignored by whites and blacks in Australia. Snake Dancing is the second in an autobiographical trilogy written by Sykes. It picks up from our late teenage years in Canberra, through to her time in Sydney, Melbourne and London. The language is simple, which makes it very easy to read, however the events that occur to Sykes, leave you shaking your head in disbelief. She comes across as a resourceful and quietly determined woman. This is despite the hurdles, both sexist and racist, constantly placed in her path. This book highlights the agonisingly slow progress that the Australian people have made towards reconciliation in the past thirty-five years and is essential reading for all Australians and those overseas interested in this country's history.
