Arthur Henry Gooden has done it again with "Smoke Tree Range" by presenting the west in all of its glory, as it was presented in the 1930's. I first read this book 40 years ago in an abridged version to "speed up the action" and when I re-read it, I was just as thrilled as I was back then. Why they cut what they did really makes no sense because the novel speeds along at a rapid pace. I am glad someone is reprinting Gooden's work, as he is a "traditional" western author whose work has gone relatively unknown, except to us who enjoy such product. Gooden learned his craft as a screen writer in Hollywood during the silent era, and his books reflect the pace and patter of those days. So, if you are looking for a good read of action, romance--with trouble between hero and heroine--this is the book for you. A western when the west was still young. Read and enjoy.
