The small Midwestern town of Creviston becomes a busy place on the Fourth of July 1967. Town folks, including four young wives and their families, are gathering at the park for the annual celebration. TERESA FARRIS, married with two daughters, spends a lot of time daydreaming about her high school sweetheart, Doug Jones, who shows up at the park with his pregnant wife, Linda. Alcohol and lust also show up. Teresa and Doug share a slow dance and the old sparks fly. Soon after the Fourth, they meet for coffee and embark on a sizzling affair which threatens to destroy both their marriages. JANET STEELE, daughter of a wealthy couple and heiress to the family business, arrives home from college to find her old friends married. In desperation, she rushes into marriage with a handsome factory worker, who is also an opportunist and a gambler, only to later find the love of her life in a very unexpected place. DIANNE POWERS had to get married at sixteen and has an eight-year-old son. Her husband, Mike turns into a verbally-abusive man and attempts to control her every move. She feels as though life is passing her by. He is a big shot at a local construction company and spends his evenings at the local tavern with his cronies, drinking and flirting with other women. Dianne goes to work at a local dress shop and soon has an opportunity to purchase the business, which angers Mike, but this is the age of the women's movement and she isn't backing down. JILL HINES has three sons and a great husband, but is suffering from postpartum depression. After the death of her father, she and her mother go to work transforming their old farm house into a Bed & Breakfast Inn. Jill survives several setbacks in her recovery, until a catastrophic event occurs that puts her very existence in peril.
