The San Francisco Bay Area during the 1960s and 70s was a special place; the hippies were born there, the surfers thrived there and the student activists made their protest there. Between the south end of San Francisco Bay and the bay of Monterey is the mountainside town of Los Gatos. While much of the Bay Area was endeavoring to change the rest of the country, the young people of Los Gatos got busy transforming their town. They worked to replace the old commerce of antiques and agriculture with art, culture and a new sense of community vitality. For awhile, they succeeded.
