When Eddie and Marie's parents emigrated from Europe in the late 19th Century, they settled in New York City. Eddie spent his childhood helping his uncles deliver sawdust in a horse-drawn wagon. Marie spent her early years in a carriage unable to walk. Eddie's parents were from France and Italy. Marie's parents came from Ireland and Germany. Still Eddie and Marie managed to meet, marry, and have children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Anna and George's parents emigrated from Eastern Europe. They were from an area known today as Slovakia. They settled in Pennsylvania and became coal miners and farmers. Anna came from a farm, and George was a coal miner. Their oldest son left to live in New York City where they joined him. That's where my parents, George Jr. and Patricia, met and married. The union of these two families is where my memories begin. It is said that our sense of smell forges the deepest links to our earliest memories, and there is a saying that we eat first with our eyes. This book is where memories and the senses meet in our favorite stories and recipes. It is a book about family and friends gathered around the table to taste delicious food and to remember.
