John Phillips has written for Car & Driver magazine for as long as I can remember. In addition to his more conventional automotive journalism, he contributes a few features every year about "specialty" vehicles: garbage trucks, earth moving machines, track-trucks, hearses, ice-cutting barges, Los Angeles class nuclear subs, that sort of thing. Now Phillips has written a novel in which all these variegated vehicles are worked into the story line. (longtime readers of the magazine will immediately find the names of these vehicles familiar.) If you are the sort of person who is amused by Phillips' dark and sarcastic humor in Car & Driver, you will love this book. (Some of the prose is lifted directly from old C/D stories.) Phillips is prone to bouts of what might be called "PJ O'Rourke Disease" -- he tries too hard to cram something funny or offbeat into every single paragraph -- but he really is a funny guy. And if you've never read C/D, the novel is still riotously funny on its own merits; just be aware that all the vehicles he writes about in the book (eg Rev Halfoat's hearse, the McNeilus Auto-Reach Dual Drive Volvo garbage truck, etc.) are real items that Phillips has actually operated.

This book made me laugh out loud. The characters and plot twists keep you guessing. If you like Carl Hiaasen or Elmore Leonard, you will love this book. But it's truly original, I've never read anything quite like it. This now tops my list of favorite books!
