Between the sixth and tenth centuries, the Greek peninsula underwent one of the most profound demographic and cultural transformations in Mediterranean history. When Slavic-speaking peoples crossed the Danube, driven southward by plague, climate deterioration, and the organizational pressure of the Avar Khaganate, they entered a Byzantine world already weakened by Justinian's overextended wars and devastated by pandemic.
