When eighteen-year-old Rhonda first meets Dave in the college canteen in Johannesburg, she shuns him as a weirdo because he has a shaved head. But when she sees him again, she finds herself inexplicably falling in love, something that has never happened before, even though she has had numerous previous boyfriends. But then Dave is different: charismatic, sensitive, funny and spontaneous - although he can also be unexpectedly moody and withdrawn, and blows hot and cold in their relationship. It is only on a passionately romantic holiday together, that Rhonda finally discovers the reason for Dave's erratic behaviour and mood swings. The discovery forces her to question her own feelings, as well as all her previously held convictions and beliefs. A love story that 'packs a powerful punch'.- Books for Keeps - 'Well-written, thought-provoking novel.'- Publishers Weekly - 'The love affair is handled beautifully with explicit passion.'- School Library Journal -
I first read this book when I was 15 years old. I am now almost 30 and still remember the impact it had on me. It is a story about apartheid and the effect it had on people of all color. I was so moved by the story that I wrote to the author who, in return, sent me a beautiful letter. Currently out of print, I recommend that everyone try to get a copy of this book.
