Might more correctly be called, "The Compleat Early Werks . . ." This previously unpublished compilation contains what were two small volumes of poetry, The Moment Musicale and Self-Inflicted Wounds, an unfinished group of poems, The Sundance Series, and a collection of lyrics, Old Songs & Songs Unsung. Also included are several drawings, and an assembly of short prose jottings (from a pre-tweet era), The Dispatches of Curmudgeonous Erectus ExPoetus. The poetry, lyrics and other "stuff" finally presented in this volume represent a sort of literary archaeology, a time capsule from the late 1960's through the '70's. After sitting for nearly 40 to 50 plus years on a closet shelf these "moments" resonate still, their essence not frozen in that time. From the profane to the sublime, the absurd to the sensual, the perspective is wryly jaundiced yet remains resolutely humane. Many of the pieces slap your consciousness in a way similar to a koan. You will likely find both delights and affronts. So be it. You may have to think and there will be some laughs, whether silly or rueful. That is enough.
