After turning 33, Kali Kees decided to write one poem a day. She was inspired by Haruki Murakami (who wrote about the year 33 as one of transitions), On Kawara (who captured dates in his "Today" series of paintings), and Ted Hughes (who wrote frankly about significant moments in his life in his 1998 poetry collection "Birthday Letters"). Kees's 33rd year happened to be a dramatic one. These poems, written between August 2023 and August 2024, are drawn from a much larger collection. They are lightly edited, and are meant to capture feelings or significant moments from the day which they were written.
