A Favorite Historical Novel from my Childhood

I read this historic novel when I was in grade school in the 50's and remember thinking, that for a man, it was a remarkable well written strong female character. It was only as an adult that I learned that author Henry J. Colyton was the nom de plume of Sarah Zimmerman, so now it made sense.
