Yoder is influenced by Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg, Ohio. It is easy to see why Yoder's home community is angry with him. Yoder uncovered many secrets from the male patriarchal society that ruled in Hartville many years. The stories are true, but written as a historical novel to fill in the gaps of the grey areas that cannot be ascertained with certainty. What is true of Hartville is symtomatic of other communities across America.
