Henrik Dahl, a wealthy Norwegian businessman residing in Japan, engages inspector Gunnar Ludvigsen of the Oslo City Police to investigate the disappearance of his wife, Rita. Rita, who is also Norwegian, is red-haired, good-looking and universally popular. To all intents and purposes the two are happily married. Late one night (morning in Japan) a distraught Henrik rings Gunnar and tells him that Rita has been missing for three weeks. She had been on a visit to Norway and was on her way back home. He knows of Gunnar's record when it comes to solving serious crimes and wants him to take exactly the same route she took. To start with, Gunnar turns him down, but when Henrik says that he can take Birgit, his wife, with him, he finally allows himself to be persuaded. Henrik promises that he will be well paid. To Gunnar's dismay, Henrik had not reported his wife's disappearance to the Norwegian police because, he said, the two of them had all too often featured in scandal and gossip magazines, and he didn't want to give the press another field day.An added complication is that Rita had once been Gunnar's girlfriend. She had married Henrik on the rebound years earlier when she and Gunnar broke up after a bitter quarrel. Gunnar and Henrik had been classmates at school and had once been close friends, though their relationship had long since cooled. Rita had been in the same class.
