Sing Me a Song

Very often, people starting out at the same level often end up with widely differing fortunes. This is why perfect equality will always remain elusive, because there are always elements of character and luck. Like most of his neighbours, Manduli had the good fortune to get fifteen acres of prime land. He made poor decisions, however, and is an ardent womanizer even in his old age, so he gradually sells most of it. All the same he remains a good citizen, so he gets leadership positions in the village. His unbridled passion, however, continually gets the better of him. In this way he wanders from Christian values and social ethics in this sense becoming a failure. From time to time, he has genuine pangs of regret and starts to make amends with his conscience. His family has to live with the legacy of his profligacy, a role they take after their various fashions. It is perhaps not only in material and spiritual conditions that we ought to be judged, but also in the efforts we put in to better these. It is in thus doing that we may chance to discover our lost or truncated song in our experiences and past. The song is therefore a metaphor of the redemption which we all quest, regardless of our station.
