The four mast steel hulled sailship, Sindia, was built in 1887 by Harland & Wolff, of Belfast, Ireland. In 1901, Sindia, captained by a Scottish Master, and First and Second Mates, shipwrecked along the coastline of Ocean City, NJ., as a result of a major storm, along with the ship's crew of 30 merchant sailors. Sindia was homeward bound following a round the world voyage to Shanghai and Kobe, and was ladened with beautiful hand painted curios and wares, all made in either China or Japan. The wreck of Sindia and her crew and cargo, some think a portion of which were stolen valuables, has, nearly 115 years later, remained Ocean City's famous shipwreck. Some of the salvaged cargo and other artifacts are on display at the Ocean City Historical Museum.
