Get Up and Coding in VB Quickly With This
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 15 years ago
I have been away from Visual Basic since version 6.0. I used this book as a VB refresher and to help me to get up to speed with VB 2008 so that I can take an advanced VB 2008 class at the local community college. I found that I was able to quickly absorb the material and to get going again with VB. This text does not go into great detail on any topic, but that served its purpose well. If you are looking for a guide to get you started in Visual Basic, this book will allow you to do just that. It is also valuable if you are wanting to get up back to speed with the current version of VB. If you want a book that will give every detail about VB, you will want to look elsewhere.
If you want to learn programming, this is the best book I've seen.

I've always wanted to learn programming and have looked at a myriad of books. I was always told the best languages to learn from are scripting languages like Python and Ruby. I checked out books on those scripting languages and was put to sleep. They usually spend a few chapters explaining object oriented programing, high level languages, and the importance of open source code. Then they jump into a boring "hello world" program and thought you'd be excited about it. Usually from there, the books jump off into more complicated topics and quickly goes over your head, or you just lose interest regurgitating code for worthless programs. This Deitel book is totally different. It comes with a copy of Microsoft Visual Basic Express edition, so there's nothing to buy, and there's no license or expiration period. The software is good forever, no 180 day trial. Many of us get excited about learning something when we can see the results produce something we are familiar with - we're highly visual creatures. Well, the Deitel book starts you off creating GUIs, with buttons, text boxes and labels right away. Of course, the GUIs don't do anything, but it gets you excited about something you're familiar with as a computer user. After you set up GUIs, then they take you through step by step adding the code to make the event driven applications actually do something. Basically, every chapter introduces a new concept, then walks you through tutorials, and at the end of the chapter, there's exercises (where you're on your own) that re-enforce the concepts you learned that chapter. Don't bother with other programming books, these are the best I've seen.

An easy and fun way to learn Visual Basic 2008
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 17 years ago
This is one of the easiest and most helpful book for anyone to learn Visual Basic 2008. It is tutorial driven with complete working code supplied on the CD packaged with the book. The IDE controls and Visual Basic structures are introduced gradually in a piecemeal and painless fashion so that the reader is not overwhelmed by a flood of new concepts and programming structures. The reader test-drives a small application at the beginning of each chapter and then builds up the application with helpful, easy-to-follow steps. You are very unlikely to find any easier book than this one for Visual Basic 2008. Once you have gone through this beginners' book, you might like to round out your mastery of Visual Basic 2008 with its more complete cousin Visual Basic 2008: How To Program. Both books are strongly recommended for anyone learning Visual Basic 2008.
