In between the time I preached in the Catholic Church and in the Lutheran Church, I sat through numerous sermons in those two denominations as well as many other Mainline Christian and Evangelical churches and asked myself, "Will anyone remember this sermon by Wednesday?" After I met Cindy, I asked her on the way home, "Do you remember what the sermon was about?" That prompted me to write sermons that challenged people and me.Sermons should teach people how to live their faith. They should also be easily recalled later in the week. As you read these sermons, they should accomplish both of those tasks. They should also be read as one reads a play. Sermons are oral expressions primarily. The preacher or homilist is allowed liberty to mold language into a form that strikes the ear. Read them as oral art.
