This is his story.Simon Fenn was pottering southwards heading for warmer climes and hoping to find a sailing companion. He met Susan, who was frustrated with her empty life. She helped Simon sail to the Bahamas, but then returned to her own life, full of new ideas and plans for change.Thereafter Susan sent Michael with his mother Helen, joined briefly by Michael's father. Jennifer and her mother Sally were cheated out of their vacation, spending their time instead with Michael and Simon. Finally came Alice with her six year old granddaughter Amy, whom Alice had spirited away to escape her parents, warring over a divorce with Amy as a pawn. The sailing life then became trips from one sandy beach to the next, ice cream cones and bed time stories; with Simon feeling a growing affection for little Amy and her grandmother. But eventually they too had to leave.Simon, alone again, decided to visit the pro-bono clinic established in a Mexican village by Susan and members of her doctor husbands practice. There he found a vibrant little community doing good work. But everyone there had someone and Simon returned to his boat still alone and in a gloomy frame of mind, not knowing that Alice was already there working with the marina to get the boat ready.Once their initial excitement had subsided, Simon and Alice looked for some purpose in their lives; this came in the shape of ten year old June, another of Susan's needy souls, who had not spoken since witnessing the death of her grandparents in a fiery accident several months earlier. Loving care repaired June and they remained a family long past the time when Simon and Alice gave up sailing for a beachfront cottage in North Carolina.
