Simhi's Dreams: The Carrying: A Novel That Teaches Sanskrit, Sentence by Sentence
Twelve nights. Twelve dreams. And beneath them, a fire.
On the night the cub dreams her first dream, far below the tall grass, a tortoise comes down to a fire that should have gone out long ago, and asks the snake who keeps it to help him set down a life: the whole story of Gāyatrī, the golden huntress - the mother the cub barely knew.
Above, the cub dreams: a snake in a cave, a tortoise in a river, a mouse who goes within, a goddess who does not flinch. Each dream carries a piece of the old language. Below, at the fire, the mother's life is told the way the old lives are told - slowly, with nothing left out.. Night by night the two stories climb toward each other.
This is where the Sanskrit sentences begin arriving in earnest. They arrive inside the dreams, more each night - and inside each dream, her father gives her every word as it comes, from the simplest first dream to the fuller conversations of the twelfth. No tables, no drills. By the last morning the cub is reading the old language. So are you, without quite noticing.
