Leon Silverman, a young Jewish-American, drops out of college to fight against Germany in WWII. The story follows his basic training, combat and being wounded in Normandy, recovering in England, being taken prisoner in the Ardennes battle, and eventually returning home. A central theme is identity theft. Fearful of how the Nazis will treat him as a Jewish POW, Silverman takes a dead GI's dog tags and identity. The ruse works, but Silverman must later decide his real identity and what he owes the dead soldier. He must also deal with an army clerk who tries to blackmail him.
