A Great First Book

I started my daughters reading by reading to them well beyond when they were reading themselves. We read a lot of "chapter books" - Redwall, Madeleine L'Engle, C. S. Lewis, even the first few Harry Potter stories. Our youngest is now 16, so I don't read to them anymore, but if I did this book would be in our stack. As a sci-fi fan, I liked the different magical races living alongside humans - satyrs, centaurs, dwarves, dryads, etc. And I very much liked the coming of age theme. The characters are given enough detail to interest the reader while not getting in the way of the story line. There was a lot of action, with the different characters having to pull together to solve problems that lay in their way. The length seemed just about right. Some may feel there was too much in this first book - too many characters, too many crises, too many beings ready to help them along their way. I would put this book in the pre-teen category - ages 9 to 12-ish. Maybe, but I am still looking forward to seeing Peter Crowell's next book.

A Throughly Enchanting Fantasy

November 10, 2006Okay, so it is two years since I wrote the original review and I stand by it.I am re-reading this in preparation for the second volume and find it just as enjoyable as I did the first time around.I notice in reading some of the reviews here that more than a few people feel a lack of characterization. I simply do not see this. They have personalities and act in certain, consistent ways...much of it quite endearing. I don't know what people expect or need rom an author if they can't see this. Others claim the action moves too swifly to get any sense of place or time. I repeat what I stated in my original review...I often found myself stopping to savor the writing and the feeling of "place" I derived from this book. The passages don't slap you in the face; they are there, though, and you need to take your time to savor them. I agree with the reviews that say one needs to accept this book on it's own merits. It is not Harry Potter or Tolkien but it is, nonetheless, a very nice place to visit. Oh, as to this being only for the 9-12 year olds. I am 12 a couple of times over and I disagree. Please, read this but make it a slow, leisurely journey. If you speed through this you will miss a lot of it's nuances. October 14, 2004This book is a delight. The story is written in good, clean prose, the descriptions are such that you can practically sense where the actions is happening. The characters are wonderful and real...no real superheros here. They are following their dreams and react as you or I would to disappointment, fear, joy. One gets a real feel of the personalities of the characters in this book and the trip you accompany them on is one that you wish was longer. What is particularly nice about this book is that the characters on the quest are a disparate group (dryads, centaurs, satyrs etc) yet they all tend to get along and support each other and there is a sense of genuine caring. Read this book and take your time doing it....enjoy the trip and the new friends you will make.

Next installment please...

True Adventure

I've read the book and loved it. Loved the characters, I feel like I have new friends. The book was filled with wonderful adventures. I recommend.

A fun and exciting story

I found this book to be a very exciting adventure story that I could not put down. I did not want the book to end, in fact, I was craving more pages to read when I finished the last chapter! I enjoyed all the character and I hope to learn more about them in future books. I think the author wrote a wonderfull story, and I believe just about anyone over 8 would love this book.
