Silly Rhymes for Smart Kids is a treasury of 101 read-aloud poems for curious children and the grown-ups who read to them. Some of the rhymes are pure nonsense. Many hide a real piece of science, technology, engineering or maths inside the joke: why the sky is blue, how bats see with sound, why ice floats, how a lever can lift an uncle the size of a sofa, what a googol is, and why bees build hexagons. Every one of those poems ends with a "True or silly?" note, so young readers discover that the silliest-sounding facts are very often true.
Written for reading aloud, the poems bounce with rhyme and rhythm and are full of characters children will want to hear again and again. There's a gentle Australian flavour, with kookaburras, platypuses, wombats and gum trees, and the collection follows the shape of a child's day, from waking up in the morning to the final Goodnight.
