Featuring a captivating central performance by Bruce Dern, visual effects that rival anything in 2001: A Space Odyssey and a powerful ecological message, Silent Running is a haunting and prescient sci-fi classic that resonates even more strongly today than it did at the time of its original release.

Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern) and crew are in charge of taking care of the last remaining forests. These forests are a conservation project in space. Aside from my cat (some cats will eat the oddest things), Lowell seems to be the only one to enjoy fresh cantaloupe. The rest of mankind prefers ersatz food.
There are three cuties: Huey, Dewey, and Louie. They are robots; however, you feel sorry for them when they get hurt or worse than you do for those insensitive humans who think that going home to their families is more important than watching unnecessary plants. So, bury your problems like Lowell and get on with the important stuff like saving the forest.
This message in a bottle story is worth watching periodically to keep a perspective on what is important. Paper or plastic? Just bring a lot of Kleenex.
