Silence on Calloway Lane
She types every word the courtroom speaks. She has never been allowed to say her own.
For 11 years, court reporter Delphine Kincaid has sat below the bench in Halbrook County, Virginia, recording other women's stories word for word. She records the recantations, the "I fell down the stairs," the petitions that get withdrawn. At home on Calloway Lane, her husband runs her life by rules that are never written down. He is Sergeant Warren Kincaid, a decorated deputy the whole town loves. He logs her car's mileage, hands her $40 every Friday, and calls the landline every night at 10:30.
Then Solomon moves in next door.
He is a Grammy-winning R&B star, hiding from the world while he recovers from surgery, and he is forbidden to speak a single word. With only a yellow legal pad and 22 feet of crepe myrtle hedge between them, an unlikely friendship begins. It grows through Sharpie notes on porch steps and whispered nights while Warren works the night shift. It grows through a song built from the rhythm of a stenographer's hands.
But Warren is watching, and so is the old mailman across the street, who has been writing everything down for 14 years.
When the storm finally comes, both Delphine and Solomon will pay a price. And the man who lost everything to protect her will offer her the one thing no one has ever given her: a door that locks only from the inside.
Silence on Calloway Lane is a slow-burning story of survival, found family, and a woman learning to put her own words on the record.
