Sierra Summer 1874 : The Further Adventures of Deborah Whitney
No Customer Reviews
Sierra Summer, 1874 again picks up the story of independent young Deborah Whitney and her pioneering California gold rush parents. In July their orphaned, abused house guest, Selena Kelly, departs by stagecoach to live with foster parents and suddenly life is very flat for Debbie.Over the rest of the timbercutting season, as David Whitney moves his lumbering operation from Shady Flat to another mill in the high country, a new set of challenges arises for the entire family. The international flavor of the hired hands -- including Cornish and Chinese -- and the different American cultural strands -- Southern, Eastern and Midwestern -- provide a constant education. Young and old, male and female, the tempers of this seasonal collection of strangers are tested as they strive to live together peaceably in close quarters. The terrain, flora and fauna are quite different at the higher altitude of the Upper Mill's, a constant source of delight to this girl who is a confirmed lover of the outdoors. Debbie finds the natural world equally as interesting as humanity -- if sometimes as threatening and dangerous.A visit from her favorite (slightly daring) aunt and uncle and adventures with several neighbor boys intensifies the lessons Debbie learns about the quirks in human nature, especially those of adults. A teaparty that becomes a women's equality rally adds relish to life as the summer cycle comes to a close.
