Eagle, the ancient band stallion, had long promised to release his imprisoned herd from their captors, the rebel comancheros. Their night has arrived-the evening of the Sierra Moon, when the full moon will sit atop the mountain peaks, illuminating the fleeing horses' path to freedom. As they prepare to leave the renegade camp in the middle of the night, they hear the anguished cries of an enslaved Indian female who is with child. Eagle's determination to rescue the woman causes conflict among many of the horses, but Eagle is determined not to leave the camp, or this life, without freeing her.
