Set in the world of Beowulf and based upon the 12th Century epic, The Nibelungenlied, and real historical events, comes the legendary story of Siegfried the Dragon Slayer.436 A. D.Siegfried is young, handsome, arrogant, brave and ambitious, but after an encounter with a fierce, man-eating dragon, Siegfried becomes invincible - or so he thinks - and longs to become the greatest of heroes. Tired of hunting in the forest and having beautiful maidens throwing themselves at his feet, Siegfried hears of a Princess so beautiful no man is allowed to marry her except for one equal to her brother, King Gunther. Determined to prove himself superior to Gunther, Siegfried challenges the King to a duel, winner takes all. What follows is a series of events that would change the course of European history, leading to the rise of Attila the Hun.Siegfried the Dragon Slayer is a powerful coming-of-age tale, a story of love, betrayal, murder and revenge; of war and death, but also the struggles of life and the triumph of the human spirit. In a world occupied by Roman armies, powerful women, Orcs, Dwarves, Giants and Dragons, Siegfried only need fear the monsters closest to him.'We have been told in ancient tales many marvels of famous heroes, of mighty toil, joys, and high festivities, of weeping and wailing, and the fighting of bold warriors. Of such things you can now hear wonders unending!' - The NibelungenliedReview5/5 Spread the word: A Legend rebornFollowing a set of action-packed and emotional stories, S.A. Swaffington delivers what is now his magnum opus using his imagination and traces of previous works to bring forth a colorful setting and epic cast of Heroes. The story is broad and has tons of memorable moments. There are few cameos and the plot reads it fast, as the story is very engaging. The author reused some good ideas from The Scourge of the Gods (other of his books) in a great way and refined them to create an engulfing story that will keep you turning pages. The characters won the upper hand, as our main hero is something different from other versions of this legend. On here Siegfried is more human, he has invulnerability but can be tired and can die by chocking and some other ways that don't require spilling blood. He is more mature as the story advances, realizing that his wife is his biggest treasure. He also gets shocked and depressed when Kriemhild is kidnapped, but he demonstrate that he can overcome those feelings and use them to get strength to recover his wife.Other heroes such as Hengist and Horsa, perform very good roles, being closer to the ones seen in Hengist and Horsa Series (by this same author), so I like them very much. In fact, although the plot found on those series seems to differ with this new book, some of the vents can be placed together and be sort of filling the gaps, especially in the Scourge of the Gods.Swaffington has remade his ideas about the Nibelungenlied and delivered a story that is epic, engaging and emotive, but it is also one of the most friendlier versions of this legend, removing some parts of the plot that are heavy and unnecessary. The author has achieved a great story that in my opinion is his best work to date.Juan Gallardo Ivanovic, Goodreads
