This book consists of Five Stories set in the city of Palermo; Ten short "tableaux" of life in a Sicilian mountain village, and to finish, "The Market of Ballaro'", stories set in the famous Palermitan market of Ballar .. Episodes.
The first story of Palermo is about the day of Giovanni Falcone's funeral, the Magistrate blown sky high by the Mafia together with his wife and bodyguards on the 23rd of May, 1992.
Tommaso is Don Vinenzo's servant and has been for many years. Don Vincenzo is old now but that does not stop him yiedling his immense power over all the island. Soon, in order to escape the tragic heat of Palermo, they will move to Don Vincenzo's villa near Caltanissetta, where the old man will bury himself in his greatest hobby, Entomology, living days and nights beside his microscope. But today, Tommaso is dressing him in his good suit, the one he usually wears for funerals. Yes, it was his hand together with many others which had risen that evening to give the order to blow the Magistrate to pieces, so he must show himself in church.
The second tells of a maid, a former prostitute, who has been given the chance by a kind hotelier, of an honest job in his Pensione. Despite all she returns to her "m tier".
The third describes a desperately unhappy and lonely pensioner, "La Signorina", who has taken up residence in a small hotel. A bird-like creature, plastered with make-up, she and the hotel owner clash constantly, sparks fly..until one day she expires on a raging hot day and a Sunday.. the owner grieves for weeks, he has lost his sparring partner, and shortly after, dies.
The fourth tells of a very rich lady descended from a Prince. She talks to her English guest about her upbringing in the Sicilian countryside, with villas, servants and carriages. Then the peasant uprising in the 1950's, when she finds her father, The Prince, stabbed wenty-three times with his eyes gouged out in a ditch. A comon thing in those days under the Sicilian sun.
The last story tells of a teacher who teaches in the poorest part of Palermo.. this is a lesson in Life.
Part 2 consists of the potrayal of villagers in a Sicilian mountain village, 1200 m tres high: The Emigrant; The Grandfather; Maria; The Return of the Emigrant; Carmelo; Antonia; Tatana; The Priest; Don Antonio; The Party's Secretary.
The book finishes with "The Market of Ballaro'" Neighbours, ... and Episodes.
