Jeff Chaussier must go to Europe to find his fiancee Bryna who is in the hands of a man with designs on her. His only clues come in the form of cryptic letters with ominous overtones. To get there, he is engaged as a chaperone for a student who is seemingly interested only in booze and babes--or is he. As he travels around Italy, a mysterious woman gives Jeff hints as to Bryna's location. But she has apparently become far too involved with her captor. Jeff has one ally as he attempts to regain Bryna. His brother in Sorrento is a retired Navy officer with many skills. Bryna is found in a hotel in Rome in a compromising situation. Jeff must now deal with his feeling of betrayal. Stung, Bryna conceives a plan to resolve her situation. Unhappily it involves returning to her captor to ferret out information. Jeff goes to a midnight meeting in the ruins of Pompeii he knows to be a trap with his brother and his ward as his only help, until the mysterious woman who has dogged his travels appears with her own score to settle. There is still a relationship to repair. Jeff and Bryna travel in France and England, but their travels are interrupted with numerous clues about the reason for Bryna's abduction and threatening hints about what awaits them in New Orleans.The answer lies at home. Getting there requires a transatlantic flight, which is not Jeff's forte. Fortunately, Bryna has a solution to his fear if flying that may get them safely home.
