Rancher Blair Bishop of Two Forks, Texas, has too many enemies . . . and they are closing in on him. Macy Modock, whom Bishop sent to prison ten years ago, is out of the hoosegow. Modock is returning... This description may be from another edition of this product.
This was originally published in 1969 as Shotgun Settlement and credited to Alex Hawk ,a frequent Kelton pen name . Blair Bishop is the leading rancher in Two Forks ,Texas ,and his advancing years have brought some physical decline ,mainly arthritis in hands and hips ,giving an opportunity to those anxious to take over his property . Among these is Clarence Cass his feckless neighbour who tries to graze his own cattle on Bishop's land in a time of drought .The situation is complicated by the love affair between their respective offspring ,Jessie Cass and Bishop's son ,Allan ,which leads to an estrangement between father and son.A more potent threat comes from Macy Modock ,recently released from prison and vowing revenge on Bishop as having been responsible for his incarceration .He and his ruthless henchman Darby poison the water tanks on Bishop land and he also employs a devious lawyer ,Quincy ,to bribe witnesses alleging Bishop's rights to the land were acquired by force and coercion . Nor is he averse to a little cattle rustling and when this comes to light the scene is set for a climactic siege of the Cass ranch before the situation is resolved . This is a violent but not graphic book and ,one slighly risible death (by clothesline!)apart is a satisfyingly slick ,professional piece of work with a suitably chilling villain ,a flawed but worthy hero and a heroine who is no shrinking violet but a capable and feisty woman fierce in her own defence and that of those she loves This is solid Western entertainment by a genre master and devotees will enjoy reading it
