"Shoes in the River" is a story inspired by an old Chinese custom of throwing one's shoes in the river after a heavy burden has been lifted - a burden from the past, or perhaps one being carried at the present time - an obstacle to enjoyment of life and looking forward to the future. Following the ceremonial tossing of the old shoes, new shoes would be donned to carry the person to happiness. "Shoes in the River" is the story of a fictional Chinese family caught up in the lingering policies of old regimes, edicts of new regimes, and the continuing struggle for basic human rights, including freedom of worship and the freedom to embrace or reject modern technology. While the characters are fictional, the issues are real, based on recognized and widely published historical facts. China has always been a country steeped in mystery and tradition, but is increasingly coming to the forefront as a prominent player in some of the most important aspects of life on this planet - international relations, business and commerce, and the environment.
