Learning about what makes you special

This is one of my favorite childhood books! My grandmother (who just happens to be named Shirley) read this to my sister and I every time we came to visit. We were utterly convinced it was about her! Now, I'm all grown up with 2 girls of my own, and I have introduced them to the wonderful work that is Shirleybird. It tells the story of a little girl who wanted to be special, really special. When she decided to become a bird, it wasn't exactly what her parents had in mind, but they eventually came to accept her choice and still loved her, eventhough she was different than what they had expected. As far as they were concerned, she had been really special all along. I highly reccomend this as a regular addition to the bedtime story repertoire.
