Shenandoah National Park is a marvelous place that makes the beauty of nature easily accessible to motorists, while providing a wilderness experience to those who want to hike away from the road. This book provides a photographic overview of the park and its wildlife, accompanied by just enough interesting text to keep you reading the captions. Rob and Ann Simpson are teachers at Lord Fairfax Community College, which is not far from Shenandoah National Park. They are professional photographers with expertise in science and natural history, so their images reflect a close relationship with the park and its wildlife. The photographs in this coffee-table book are lovely, with deep saturated colors, covering a variety of subjects and seasons. My personal favorite is a small image of a Pipevine swallowtail, a bright blue butterfly photographed against a background of orange flowers. For readers who want to view the scenery that tourists come to Skyline Drive to see, there's plenty of that here, expertly done.
