Shelf Life: Does Democracy Have an Expiration Date?

Democracy depends on conditions that cannot be assumed to last forever: shared reality, institutional legitimacy, social trust, economic stability, and citizens capable of distinguishing truth from manipulation.

In Shelf Life, William Adams examines what happens when those conditions begin deteriorating simultaneously.

Blending political analysis, media criticism, historical comparison, technological inquiry, and cultural observation, Adams explores the structural forces reshaping democratic societies: institutional capture, algorithmic amplification, elite incentive systems, foreign influence operations, information asymmetry, and the fragmentation of civic identity.

The book argues that democratic decline is rarely caused by a single authoritarian figure or political ideology. More often, democracies erode gradually through the weakening of institutions, the politicization of truth, and the incentives of systems that reward outrage over stability.

Written from outside the credentialed institutions it critiques, Shelf Life challenges readers across ideological lines to confront a difficult possibility: that democracies, like all complex systems, possess a shelf life unless actively maintained by an informed and engaged citizenry.

Provocative, rigorous, and deeply timely, this book is both a warning and a call for democratic renewal before the deterioration becomes irreversible.
