Sheep farming agro-industrial system in Paraná - Brazil

This book presents an analysis of how the institutional, organizational and technological environments influence the competitiveness, business strategies and performance of the beef sheep agro-industrial system in western Paran - Brazil, by applying the prospective structural analysis (PSA) method and the concepts of the new institutional economy (NIE) and the systemic relations model. The results of the study suggest that beef sheep farming rests in an unstable and highly competitive environment, with the most influential and, at the same time, highly dependent variable being the informal slaughter of animals. The lack of specific legislation, the high tax burden and tax evasion have a major influence on the sector's competitiveness and are detrimental to it. For significant changes to take place, it is necessary, among other factors, for the system's coordination to be driven by the agro-industries through the development of levers for mutual cooperation between the industry and producers.
