Role Reversal

For mother and daughter Laura and Tamika Fraser, understanding and communicating are difficult, to say the least. Laura says one thing, Tamika hears another. Tamika believes her mother lives in a perfect world - being an adult, with money and the ability to make decisions. Unfortunately for Laura, it doesn't feel that way. Unemployed and concerned about her marriage, she's looking for ways to reinvent and improve herself. When plans Tamika made for the summer go awry, she's forced to follow her mom to Fraser, Georgia, to help pack up the family home, the house that has been in the family for more than 100 years and holds more than sentimental value. What Tamika discovers inside opens her eyes. However, Laura's eyes also open, to a crush that has been more than 30 years in the making. SHE SAID, SHE SAID written by mother and daughter Celeste & Jennifer Norfleet details the difficulties mothers and daughters are often faced with, especially during the teen years. I enjoyed the way the story reversed roles, how the mom and daughter were able to see themselves and how it helped their relationship. Also, the history that was shared about the Fraser family in Fraser, Georgia, was interesting. I think this is a great book to share between mothers and daughters.

She said She said

Ms. and Mrs. Norfleet presents with a totally awesome story about the right of passage between a mother and daughter. Laura Frasier decides to go back to her hometown to restore and sell the family home. In doing so she not only discovers a long lost friend; but she reconnects with a side of herself that seems to have gotten lost in the mix of being a mother and wife. Tamika Frasier, a high school student has definite plans for the summer in the form of a photo internship and is ticked off (to say the least) when she discovers that her plans have been changed by her parents and that she has to accompany her mother to her home town via road trip. Tamika being the typical teen with the ipod, cell phone and the misconception that it's all about her, does not understand when her mom stops to reconnect and introduce her to her family roots. The whole concept of spending this time with her mother is lame; but she quickly discovers that she and her mother are more alike that she ever dreamt as she watches her mother revert back to her teen years. In doing so, Laura changes her appearance, hangs out and parties with old friends, ignores her husband and reconnects with a high school crush all leaving Tamika to think that she has most definitely lost her mind. This whole new attitude causes a reversal of roles leaving Tamika acting the adult and Laura the teenager. If you run across this book and not pick it up; you will do yourself a serious disservice. The characters have very strong and distinct voices that will enlighten the reader. I found this book to be very diverse and appealing to parents and teens alike. I applaud Ms. Jennifer Norfleet on her debut as an author. I was not able to tell which author wrote which character which is amazing since her mom is a veteran author. Jennifer must be a natural or Celeste is a dynamic teacher. Either way, My hat goes off to them both on a job well done. Reviewed by: Eleanor S. Shields, Black Butterfly Review
