In The Late 1970s, I was a young mother who had lived in an orphanage as a child. As a teenager, I longed for family, truth, and love. Looking outside of myself, I became trapped in an unhappy, lonely marriage. When I was twenty years old, I was recruited by Jehovah's Witnesses and found myself in a religion that instructed me how to think and isolated me from society. For twenty-five years, I knocked on peoples doors trying to convince them to join the religion before Armageddon would destroy them and their loved ones. I not only sacrificed my life but the lives of my four children who were not permitted to celebrate holidays, birthdays, or have friends outside the religion. They were taught-and I believed- the world was coming to an end any day, depriving us of hope for the future. At the time, I lived in a rural town in north-central Pennsylvania. Feeling like a caged bird in an unhappy marriage and a controlling religion, I yearned to be free and desired to find love but did not know how to listen to the whispers of my heart that later became screams. At the risk of being shunned by the religious organization that gave me what I thought were answers to all life's questions, I learned to think for myself and pay attention to the voices within that longed to be free. She Hath Wings gives voice to my new found freedom.
