Grief is a strange thing. It doesn't come in waves like they say-
it comes in blows. Hard. Sudden. Unrelenting. One minute,
you're nodding politely as someone tells you they're so sorry
for your loss. The next, you're staring at a cheap, shiny coffin,
realizing this is it. This is the last time. The last moment. The
last breath that belongs to her.
Mom is gone.
The words don't settle right in my head, don't make sense.
People keep talking around me-murmurs of sympathy, a sea
of sad, knowing eyes-but none of it feels real. My mother was
here just a moment ago, and now she's not, and I don't know
where that leaves me.
I stand in the thick of it, feeling untethered, lost, but I try to hold
myself together. People are watching. Family. Friends. People
who suddenly remember I exist now that there's a tragedy to
gather around. The same people who were too busy to check in
before.
And then, as if summoned by my own thoughts, Cruella appears.

She glides in with this practiced air of sorrow, face appropriately
somber but composed. Her performance is flawless. She looks
like the dutiful sister stepping in to comfort me in my time of
need.
