Shane's Mane is the next story you should read. It's perfect for young children that are just beginning to read and can relate with the lead character, and it's also complex enough for adults to find a deeper meaning. This is a story that offers motivation for anyone that feels unable to achieve a goal, and is a great book for teaching children to overcome obstacles in their life, no matter how terrifying and impossible they seem at first. Nicole Drumheller Gargus connects readers with a sense of childhood wonder that people of all ages can appreciate. She effortlessly writes with inspiration and emotion that will have us all reading and admiring; not to mention, the pictures that will make children flip through this book all day long. Don't miss out on a great read.
Reading the World

Shane's Mane is a story about riding and reading, about the world and the word. This would be a great book to read to many students, especially those who have trouble with fluency, reading comprehension or any difficulties in school. Orla grapples with reading and comes out triumphant. She realizes that her talent and perseverance riding can help her to gradually learn language. Rather than needing to gallop across the page, Orla realizes that she can learn to read word by word. In the end, Orla is able to read the words on a bag of horse feed. In addition, Orla comes to realize that there are multiple forms of being in the world. "Shane does not know how to read," she thinks "but it does not bother him." Orla comes to learn that her talents at riding are just as valid as learning in school and grapples with many philosophical questions along the way.

Shane's Mane is a wonderful story that will serve to both transport and edify your children, as this is a book, from its opening pages, that manages the trick of being accessible without 'dumbing-down' its narrative for the sake of an audience in their formative years. Further, its enchanting pastoral theme is seamlessly complemented by photography (equine and nature) of a caliber not often associated with children's fiction. You won't be disappointed with Shane's Mane. By night your kids will dream of Shane cantering through Pennsylvanian creeks and meadows, and by day, they'll yearn for you to take them horseback riding. That's the spell that Gargus's book casts.
Insparational

My Daughter and I have read this book many times. We enjoy the story and the photos. Not only is this book well written, but, I can also relate personally. Growing up as a child with Dyslexia I know that horses not only were a pleasure in my life but they transformed my life into something much better. I truly believe that with out my horses I would not be the person I am today. This book is great for all ages and should be inspiring to all.
An encouraging story for anyone!

It is a beautiful and touching story about 2 beings who are hurting for their own reasons, and the freedom and joy they find together that ultimately serves to heal their hurt. This story would be perfect for a girl who is having trouble with self-confidence in school, as it beautifully illustrates Orla's process of struggling with reading and the dents that makes in her self-esteem, and how Shane, the horse, helps to heal that. It is compassionately written in simple sentences that are nonetheless full of imagery, so as not to frustrate the student who might still be struggling to read. However, I would definitely also recommend it to others, young or old, urban or rural, horse-lover or not - the theme of self-confidence is universal.
