Shakespeare's Sister Sonnets is a work of speculative literary fiction inspired by both Virginia Woolf and William Shakespeare. It consists primarily of William Shakespeare's sonnet sequence set alongside an equal number of original sonnets written by Alexis Goodfellow in the voice of Judith Shakespeare. As Alexis notes in its initial preface, Judith Shakespeare was a fictional sister of William Shakespeare invented by Virginia Woolf to illustrate that "it would have been impossible, completely and entirely, for any woman to have written the plays of Shakespeare in the age of Shakespeare". This collection of sonnets was written over the course of two years to give a real voice to that fictional poet and playwright, and in so doing provide an homage to those women who may well could have written works of equal caliber as William Shakespeare's if their talents had been nurtured, cultivated, and allowed to flourish. As a point of craft, these poems are carefully crafted to rhyme when pronounced in modern General American pronunciation as well as David Crystal's laborious reconstruction of original Shakespearean pronunciation.
