Great Historical Novel

I enjoy mystery novels and I like history, so it was especially enjoyable to read Shadows of Chaco Canyon, a novel that combines both. The book was entertaining and enlightening. I especially liked the descriptions and sometimes it felt like I was actually there. I appreciated the spiritual thread that runs through the novel. I was surprised by the ending, so I won't give it away. I'm fond of the Southwest and love to visit. People who have visited or live there will appreciate this book, but I would also recommend this novel to someone who is unfamiliar with the culture and history of the area.

An Intriguing Migration Story

I have had the great pleasure of visiting Chaco Canyon, New Mexico on many occasions over the past twenty years, and have had some of my own mystical dreams and experiences while there. Although there are many scholarly books published on these "Ancient Puebloan People", I had yet to read one which enfleshed the magic of the place - at least not until I read "Shadows of Chaco Canyon". Besides being a skilled historian, Stephen Brown is also a master storyteller. Entering this novel is like walking back in time, to the ethos of a people deeply connected to the powers that be in the natural and the spiritual realms, with all the glory and potential for darkness this might entail. It is also a wonderful way to enter into the historical reality of the Chacoan culture, its advanced knowledge of astronomy, and its eventual diaspora to the surrounding areas of what is now the "Four Corners" area of northern New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona. The truth of the matter is that we are all part of the grand and yet painful migration story of humans on this beautiful sphere we call earth. If we open ourselves to it, we may just tap into the collective "ancient memory" of our own migration story in reading "Shadows of Chaco Canyon". I know that I have.
