I have several books about German and related immigrants who migrated to Southern California around the time of the end of the Weimar Republic. I also have quite a few books and movies that they made before the migration.
I was surprised to find this 2008 documentary. And even more surprised to see/hear the quality of the commentary. The only drawback is that the DVD I watched does not have subtitles.
This is a listing of the most popular writers, composers, and other immigrants who settled in the Hollywood area. Many of them thrived; Others withered.
We get some interesting background music, mostly composed of the era in the documentary. There are excerpts from diaries and letters; we even get home movies. Some plates show the statistics of each person.
I thought I knew most of them from other sources, but was surprised by a few, including Lion F-e-u-c-h-t-w-a-n-g-e-r. I can relate to him as a book collector who needed room for his library. I, too, am being squeezed out of my modest abode with a collection of 10,000+ books that I find hard to relinquish.
You will want to watch it repeatedly because it moves quickly, and you will want to look up the many references.
A good follow-up book: “The Muses Flee H-i-t-l-e-r: Cultural Transfer and Adaptation” by Jarrell C. Jackman and Carla M. Borden.
